5-Day Desolation Sound Cruise
A five-day cruise through Desolation Sound aboard the Axopar 37.
Sep 22 – Sep 26, 2026 · Discovery Harbour Marina
The day
The morning began at Discovery Harbour, where the Axopar eased out past the crowded coves toward open water, bow pointed toward Georgia Strait under a sky of drifting cloud. The hills stood thick with fir as the crew settled in for the first miles, watching the moored boats fall away behind them.
The crossing brought good company on the water. A homemade catamaran puttered past near the shoreline, its builder at the helm beneath a canvas top, and later a sleek motor yacht slid by close enough to admire. Out past Mystery Reef the sea gave its best gift of the trip: a humpback whale broke clean from the surface, flinging spray against the dark line of forest beyond.
In the quiet coves that followed, the pace slowed. A paddleboard carried two of the group along a rocky shoreline, drifting past pale granite and wind-bent trees, taking in the stillness of the inlets. The water held every reflection of the hills, and the days unspooled through anchorages tucked beneath cliffs and forest, warm swims, and the kind of green-gold light the Sound is known for.
One evening closed with a sky the group would remember: a band of pink cloud mirrored perfectly in flat water, mountains layered blue behind the trees, the whole channel glowing for a few quiet minutes before the light faded.
The trip ended as it began, back across the Strait, the Axopar cutting toward Comox under a grey, breezy sky with the city rising along the shoreline ahead. The crew came in to fuel the boat, tie up, and step off, carrying home five days of whales, waterfalls, and still coves.
