7-Day Desolation Sound Cruise
A seven-day cruise from Comox through Desolation Sound and the Discovery Islands.
Sep 18 – Sep 24, 2026 · Malaspina Inlet
The day
The day began at the gate of Comox Marina, where the fleet set out across Georgia Strait, rounding Mystery Reef and Savary Island before passing the seaside town of Lund. Boats threaded Thulin Passage together, arriving at Squirrel Cove on Cortes Island for the first overnight anchorage.
From there the week unfolded along the inlets and channels of Desolation Sound. Crews explored the reversing creek at Squirrel Cove, climbed to Unwin Lake, and anchored beneath Cassel Lake Falls in Teakerne Arm, where some swam in the warm lake water. Refuge Cove offered a stop for coffee and cinnamon buns before the group continued down Lewis Channel.
Prideaux Haven brought anchorage among towering peaks, with time spent in Melanie Cove and Laura Cove. Further on, Waddington Channel gave a choice of quiet harbors — Roscoe Bay with its freshwater lake, Pendrell Sound with its warm water, and Walsh Cove with its native pictographs on the cliffs. The cruise then rounded the Redonda Islands through Homfray Channel, tracing some of the deepest soundings on the coast, before returning through Thulin Passage to Lund for another overnight.
A crossing back over Georgia Strait brought the group to Henry Bay on Denman Island, a calm anchorage with quiet sandy beaches not far from the base. Photos from along the way show boats resting together in still coves, rocky shorelines framed by forest, mountains rising over calm water, and waves breaking near a wooden dock under a grey sky.
The gathering closed as it began, back at Comox Marina. Boats were fueled, cleaned, and made ready, gear packed and checked, crews settling in for a final night before the morning checkout — a quiet end to a week spent moving gently through the coves and channels of Desolation Sound.
Day by day
Day 1 · Fri, Sep 18, 2026

Day 2 · Sat, Sep 19, 2026
- Tenedos Bay — Explore Squirrel Cove, a very protected anchorage, and check out the "reversing creek" into a beautiful back water lagoon. Head up to Teakerne Arm to anchor next to the magnificent 90' Cassel Lake falls for lunch — explore the falls and swim the warm waters of the lake. Then back down Lewis Channel, stopping at Refuge Cove for water, fuel, souvenirs or a great cappuccino and cinnamon bun, then on to Tenedos Bay for the night.
Day 3 · Sun, Sep 20, 2026
- Prideaux Haven (Melanie Cove or Laura Cove) — Hike up to Unwin Lake and explore the many trails that lead back into the great Canadian wilderness. For the next overnight, head up around the corner to the fabulous Prideaux Haven — anchor in either Melanie Cove or Laura Cove and enjoy the splendor of giant mountain peaks towering all around.
Day 4 · Mon, Sep 21, 2026
- Waddington Channel — Heading up Waddington Channel offers three options for the fourth day and night: Roscoe Bay is extremely well protected with a beautiful, warm, fresh-water lake a short walk from the anchorage; Pendrell Sound boasts the warmest water north of the tropics, often over 75°F (24°C) in summer; and native pictographs adorn the cliffs of the anchorage in Walsh Cove at the north end of Waddington Channel.
Day 5 · Tue, Sep 22, 2026
- Lund — Cruise around the Redonda Islands via Homfray Channel, which boasts the deepest soundings in coastal North American waters — 2,400 feet! Heading back down through Thulin Passage brings you to the quaint seaside town of Lund, an excellent overnight stop.
Day 6 · Wed, Sep 23, 2026
- Henry Bay, Denman Island — Cruise back across Georgia Strait to Henry Bay on Denman Island for a relaxing last night's anchorage — a quiet bay with deserted sandy beaches just 5 miles from the Base. If you prefer, or the weather is not cooperating, return to the Base that evening: fuel up, tie up, unload some gear, have a shower, maybe dinner out and a good night's sleep, ready for check out at 9:00 am.
Day 7 · Thu, Sep 24, 2026
- 9:00 AM PTComox Marina — If you stayed at Henry Bay, get up very early to fuel up and return the boat to the Base by 9:00 am. On the way to Comox Marina, check that all personal gear is packed and the boat is clean and ready for unloading so you can be clear for check-in at 9:00 am. If you came in the night before, you'll get a bit of extra sleep before checking the boat out at 9:00 am.
