Broken Group 7days Fishing

The day began at Effingham Bay Boat Haven, where three boats, Fishing One, Rainey Day, and Xiwang Hao, gathered on the water off Vancouver Island. The charts were out early, marking the route through the Broken Group, with the inner bay calm and the open Pacific only ten minutes beyond it.

Out on the water, the fishing began in earnest. A halibut was brought boatside, pale against the dark water, and a flounder came up quietly at the end of a line, hovering just below the surface before it was lifted in. The group moved between calm anchorages and open water, watching the water change character with every turn.

The highlight of the day came when a humpback whale breached close to the boats, rising fully against a backdrop of distant mountains before falling back into the sea. Cameras with long lenses were ready on deck, and the moment was caught clearly, the whale's white underside bright against the blue water.

As the boats continued through the islands, a sailboat was seen resting in a quiet cove, framed by dense forest and its reflection doubled in the still water. Later, a rainbow arched over the bay, colors mirrored perfectly on the glassy surface beneath the mountains.

Toward the end of the day, a seaplane came in to the dock in the rain, its wings catching the grey light as people stood waiting at the float. The mist settled low over the trees, and the water turned quiet and still.

The day closed with the boats settled near the Broken Group, charts glowing softly on the screens, the week's course marked and ready, the first good day of the gathering complete.
