The day

The day began at Gorge Harbour Marina on Cortes Island, where the crew came aboard Miss Behaving for a multi-day cruise into Desolation Sound and beyond, the captain setting a course that would carry them through some of the coast's quietest, deepest water.

From Squirrel Cove they passed through the cut between West Redonda Island and the Martin Islands into Waddington Channel, with the forested shorelines closing in green and still around them. They made their way to Toba Wilderness Resort, tying up at the docks beneath the trees, with the hot pool and its mossy timber walkway reflecting the forest above.

The next stretch took them into Toba Inlet itself, the fjord walls rising straight from the deep water, rock faces close enough to touch from the boat. Along the way the crew watched sea lions hauled out on the rocks at the inlet's edge, and passed rocky islets crowned with wind-bent trees, their reflections doubled in the calm channel.

Turning back, they threaded Homfray Channel toward Desolation Sound Marine Park, choosing among Prideaux Haven, Laura Cove and Melanie Cove for a quiet, protected night. A lay day followed, spent meandering through the park's coves and inlets, with mist lifting slowly off the water one morning to reveal the islands beyond.

In the evenings, the docks glowed with small comforts — a pot of pink and yellow flowers set against weathered driftwood, the sky behind it streaked red and gold at sunset, boats resting quietly at their moorings.

The cruise wound down past Powell River and across the Salish Sea, over the Comox Bar and into the shelter of Henry Bay on Denman Island, where the crew watched the sun go down over the stern, closing a trip spent entirely on the water, among forest, fjord, and calm anchorages.

Day by day

Day 1 · Tue, Sep 29, 2026
  1. Squirrel Cove, Cortes Island
Day 2 · Wed, Sep 30, 2026
  1. Walsh Cove Marine Park or Toba Wilderness Resort — Leaving Squirrel Cove, head southeast and pass through the cut between West Redonda Island and the Martin Islands into Waddington Channel. Head north and decide whether to anchor out at Walsh Cove Marine Park or tie up to the strong, comfortable docks at Toba Wilderness Resort. At the north end of Walsh Cove there are incredibly old pictographs painted on the rocks; at Toba Wilderness there's a lovely hike up to a waterfall — and showers.
Day 3 · Thu, Oct 1, 2026
  1. Toba Inlet — Today you cruise into Toba Inlet — a fjord extending 32 km into the Coast Mountains, with peaks up to 2,500 metres, many topped with glaciers. Toba is very deep right up to the rock walls; in places you can nose the boat right up to shore, with spectacular waterfalls crashing into the sea (best in the early spring thaw). Continuing up the inlet you come to Brem Bay — not a recommended anchorage, as it's a busy logging area and may be closed to cruisers. Plenty of waterfalls to photograph, and perhaps the odd black bear scavenging the shoreline.
Day 4 · Fri, Oct 2, 2026
  1. Prideaux Haven, Laura Cove or Melanie Cove — Start heading back toward Comox — either back down Waddington Channel or via Homfray Channel, which has the deepest waters in coastal North America with soundings over 900 metres. Tonight, take your pick of anchorages in spectacular Desolation Sound Marine Park: Laura Cove, Melanie Cove and Prideaux Haven all provide comfortable, well-protected anchorages.
Day 5 · Sat, Oct 3, 2026
  1. Desolation Sound Marine Park or Lund — Use this lay day to meander through the park or cruise down and around to Tenedos Bay. You have a choice of a short or long day tomorrow: either stay another night in Desolation Sound or cruise to Lund and overnight there.
Day 6 · Sun, Oct 4, 2026
  1. Henry Bay, Denman Island — Cruise back down to Powell River and pass the derelict WW2 liberty ships that formed a protected harbour for barge storage at the now-defunct paper mill. Then cruise out over the top end of Texada Island and across the Salish Sea to the Comox Bar. Once across the bar, turn to port into the protected anchorage of Henry Bay and enjoy sundowners as the sun sets over your stern.
Day 7 · Mon, Oct 5, 2026
  1. 9:00 AM PTCortes Bay community dock
